Women Making a Difference in Healthcare Innovation

Panel of women leaders, light lunch and extensive Q&A with the audience. Networking before noon and after 2:00.
Karen M. Boudreau, MD, FAAFP, Senior Vice President, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), and Medical Director for the IHI Continuum Portfolio, which addresses the patient journey in health and chronic disease care. She oversees national and international work on IHI’s Triple Aim (optimizing health, patient experience and per capita health care costs), transitions in care, and strengthening and redesigning primary care. Board certified in Family Medicine, she was previously Medical Director for Healthcare Quality Improvement at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and Medical Director at Valley Medical Group, P.C. in Western Massachusetts, where she practiced for 15 years. Dr. Boudreau has extensive experience as an improvement advisor at the health plan, medical group and hospital level, including primary care practice redesign, population management, guideline development and implementation, patient safety, and medication error prevention. In addition to her work at IHI, she practices Family Medicine one half-day per week at Boston Medical Center, where she also is a Clinical Instructor.
Karen received her BS from Trinity College, Hartford, CT, and her MD from Boston University.
Emily DuHamel Brower is Executive Director, Accountable Care Programs, for Atrius Health, the largest independent alliance of community-based physician groups in Massachusetts. Atrius Health’s 1,075 physicians and their medical teams coordinate patient care for nearly 1 million patients. Emily joined Atrius Health through Harvard Vanguard in 2010, as Senior Director, Clinical Improvement Ventures. Key accomplishments include securing Atrius Health’s participation in the Pioneer Accountable Care Organization(ACO) model, in partnership with CMS’ Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. Previously, Emily spent fifteen years as the Chief Operating Officer/Director of Finance and Operations at Urban Medical Group in Jamaica Plain. At Urban Medical, she served as Principal Investigator for a multi-year research project analyzing cost and quality outcomes to support payment reform, and developed innovative, capitated contracts for medically complex Medicare beneficiaries.
Emily received her Bachelor of Arts from Smith College, and MBA from the New York University Stern School of Business.
Anne Lang, JD ’79, has served as Vice President for Human Resources and Legal Services at Winchester Hospital for eleven years. Winchester Hospital has been on the Boston Business Journal’s Best Places to Work in Massachusetts list every year of the contest, winning the #1 spot twice, and has won the #1 spot in the Boston GLOBE’s Top 100 Best Places to Work in Massachusetts. Innovations which have led to these awards include quarterly meetings for employees to ask Senior Management about things going on in the community, teams learning together as they work on ‘lean’ projects, nursing councils run the Nursing Department, and senior leaders rounding with the night shift to ‘listen’ to employees. Prior to joining Winchester Hospital, Anne was Vice President for Human Resources and Associate Counsel at Children’s Hospital in Boston. She was also an Assistant Professor at Stonehill College. Anne has served as a Baldrige Examiner for two years.
Anne has a Bachelor’s degree from Brown University, a Master’s degree in Health Administration from George Washington University, and a law degree from Suffolk University Law School.
Somava Stout, MD, is VP of Patient Centered Medical Home Development at Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA), and is helping to redesign the health system so that it works better for underserved patients. A primary care physician deeply committed to improving the health of underserved communities, Soma helped to create a community health center that has achieved NCQA Level 3 recognition and has been highlighted as a national “best practice” for patient-centered medical home transformation. She has been invited to share her experience of developing the patient-centered medical neighborhood model of care throughout the country and has served as the President of the Medical Staff at CHA. As co-Director for the Primary Care Innovation Fellowship at Harvard Medical School, she is engaging the next generation of primary care physicians to be part of health system innovation.
Soma volunteers as the Founder and Director of the Raising Peacemakers program, which helps to empower children to make a difference in the world.
Soma received her Bachelor’s from Harvard-Radcliffe, and her MD from the University of California Berkeley-San Francisco Joint Medical Program, where she also completed a Master’s in sustainable development of health in underserved communities in Guyana.
MODERATOR - Anne Marie Conway, MHA ’00, RN, is the owner of AMC Consulting and adjunct faculty at Suffolk University/Sawyer Business School in the graduate health administration program, where she teaches the Innovation in Healthcare course. AMC Consulting specializes in clinical development operations, registries and drug development strategies. From 2001 until 2010, Anne Marie held several leadership roles at Shire Human Genetic Therapies (HGT), most recently as vice president of Development Operations. During her tenure at HGT, she led the integrated development team that resulted in approval of ElapraseTM, the first and only approved treatment for Hunter syndrome. Prior to joining Shire HGT, Anne Marie spent nearly 20 years at Tufts Medical Center as a staff nurse and the outpatient nurse coordinator in the General Clinical Research Center. Also at Tufts, she was the clinical trials manager within the Division of Gastroenterology where she oversaw multiple Phase II-IV studies in liver diseases.
Anne Marie received her BS in Nursing from Boston University and her MHA from Suffolk in 2000.
